The Town Planner's office, located on the second floor at Town Hall, oversees a wide range of functions. These include implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, preparation of grant applications, review and processing of Planning Board applications, preparation of bid documents, project management, and administration of Community Development Block Grant funds received by the Town (which pays for a number of initiatives including the Home Repair Program). This office works closely with professional consultants to implement projects that include the following: Safe Routes to Schools infrastructure improvements at Hampden Meadows School ($216,000 grant), development of plans for improvements at Town Beach and a master plan for Latham Park (utilizing bond funds), and the development of a Strategic Plan for energy utilizing Stimulus Funding available through the State. An important planning document for the Town is the Barrington Comprehensive Community Plan, a document that guides the Town's land use decisions. The Barrington Comprehensive Plan recently received the State's approval, which is effective for a five-year period ending on January 18, 2015. Rhode Island requires Comprehensive Plans to be updated at least every five years. The Town's current plan was written in-house by the Planning Office, working closely with the Planning Board, other Boards and Commissions, an extensive process that also involved the public throughout. In addition, the Town Planner is involved in a number of other projects such as the development of the Capital Improvement Program each year. Secretary to Planning & Zoning Boards/Assistant to Building Inspector
